September 14 & 21 - Living Well Into the Future: Addressing the Needs of Older Adults with Developmental Disabilities

These classes are hosted by Harbor Regional Center and are suitable for parents and for all family members of regional center consumers. This is a 2-session class and registration fee is $10.00. Focus of this workshop is assisting parents, siblings and other family members to recognize and meet the needs of older adults with developmental disabilities. As people with developmental disabilities begin to reach their 40’s and beyond, there are changes in their health, social, financial and legal needs and supports. Session 1 deals specifically with “Living Well” and will encompass changing health needs and ways to meet them for your family member with a developmental disability. There will also be information available on a variety of living options. Session II concentrates on issues “Into the Future” such as estate planning, conservatorships and other potential personal, financial and community supports.

Harbor Regional Center is hosting this training for parents, family members and caregivers of individuals with special needs. The presentation covers the laws governing inheritance and guardianship, what it will mean in terms of entitlements, and how to choose the right guardian or conservator. Presenter will be Richard Schwartz, Attorney at Law.

September 22-24 - After the Bell Rings, A National Conference on Inclusion

Come to beautiful San Diego and learn to create an organizational culture that welcomes children of all levels of ability in programs that take place in out-of-school time. From strategy, to implementation you will acquire the tools you need. This conference is hosted by Kids Included Together (KIT) and sponsored by the Bubel/Aiken Foundation. Inspirational speakers, knowledgeable practitioners, researchers and leaders, all with the focus of creating quality programs that serve all kids will be featured. This is the 6 th Annual CAL-APSE Conference. Their mission is to facilitate individual career choices for people; to advocate effective governmental support for supported employment; to provide training, education and advocacy to individuals and their families, professionals, and employers, using best practices and current and future trends based upon each individuals choices. A variety of speakers, topics and networking opportunities will be available to participants throughout the three-day conference. September 25 - Autism Challenges: Today and Tomorrow!

The Morgan Center is pleased to offer its third annual one day conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders. This year’s focus will be on where we are today with educational/social interventions and most recent research developments. We will also focus on the challenges within the next few years as children with autism become adults and need appropriate adult programs. As of December 2002, over 20,000 individuals were diagnosed with Autism in California. Seventy percent of the entire autism population served by the Department of Developmental Services is currently under the age of 14 years. The Morgan Center, Santa Clara University, M.I.N.D. Institute, UC Davis HOPE services, San Andreas Regional Center, and the Children’s Health Council sponsor this conference. Registration fee is $105 at the door.

September 30 - Friendship Focus: Practical Strategies for Facilitating Friendships

Harbor Regional Center is hosting this training presented by Rick Clemens, MA, Director of Inclusive Education and Community Partnerships. He will discuss the importance of friendships and social interactions for children with disabilities. The common barriers to developing friendships and arranging play dates will be reviewed and strategies to overcome those barriers will be presented. Methods for facilitating play dates, true friendships and community inclusion will all be discussed. Parents and caregivers will leave with practical ideas to assist in the fostering of friendships, and creating fun and supportive play opportunities for their children. Seating is limited, pre-registration is a must.

Independent Living Skills is the focus of this annual conference. A two-day track on system reform for better and more sustainable individualized services and a second track day of Training and Education on Effective Services Delivery will be offered. Planned speakers include a legislative panel, a panel of clients and family members to discuss the needs that call for reform, ways to help motivate yourself and your team in an overwhelming industry, dealing with challenging personalities and much, much more.
